The Castle of Tirana
This castle is located at the historical centre of the city of Tirana, in one of the most popular areas of it. The castle represents a field fortification with a rectangular plan of 160 x 120m, with the longest part towards East – West. It is estimated that the time when the castle was built was in the space between 1633 and the second half of the XVIII century. The castle was very quickly integrated with the growth of the city that began to expand as a result of the development of crafts, trade, etc.
In 1798, the castle fell into the hands of the Toptani Family from Kruja. In 1817, members of the Bushati Family from Shkodra, who were continuously at war with the Toptani Family surrounded the castle for a very long period of time, by permanently destroying a part of the city and its walls. Today we can only see a part of the north-eastern surrounding wall of the former castle.
The castle functioned until 1832, and then it was finally destroyed by Mehmet Rushit Pasha.
A new pedestrian area has been created recently within the walls of Tirana Castle. This area has been transformed into a recreational space for the capital city. It serves as a space where the artisans and local traditions, together with the culinary and art of Tirana are promoted.
